FINAL FANTASY V stands out for the job it does with its job system, which lets characters switch roles and grow in very flexible ways instead of being locked into one path. By our assessment, that makes it one of the series’ most interesting old-school entries for players who like tinkering with party makeup and exploiting combinations. The price of that freedom is a more system-heavy game, where progress often comes from understanding classes and abilities rather than just pushing ahead. In play it has the feel of a classic turn-based RPG: towns, dungeons, boss fights, and long stretches spent thinking about the next move. Against later Final Fantasy games, it is less about spectacle and more about mechanical play, and that is exactly why it still matters. It rewards patience and curiosity more than brute force, and the class swapping is the thing people remember.
