Evoland

Evoland wins by changing its own rules as it goes, so the joke is built into the design rather than tacked on. By our assessment, it is the kind of game for people who like seeing role-playing history compressed into one run: early Zelda-like exploration gives way to turn-based battles, better graphics, new systems, and a steady parade of genre references. That makes it clever and very readable for players who enjoy callbacks and mechanical variety. The downside is that the structure is the whole point, so once the novelty is gone the basic combat and puzzle work can feel light. In practice it plays like a tour through how adventure games grew up, with each new layer changing the feel more than the plot. Compared with a single-style RPG, Evoland is less deep but much more playful. It suits players who enjoy genre jokes and changing systems, and it leaves little room for anyone wanting one long, consistent rule set.
