Emily is Away Too

Emily is Away Too works because it understands how much of teenage and early-adult memory now lives inside a chat window. By our assessment, it is strongest as an interactive narrative where old messaging habits, profile pages, and small choices build a very specific kind of social awkwardness. The downside is that it is narrow by design: if the chat format and the nostalgic internet look do not appeal, there is not much else to lean on. In practice it feels like reading and replying, watching relationships change through text, icons, and the tiny delays between answers. It sits with the first game and similar conversation-driven indies more than with traditional adventure games. Emily is Away Too is less about action than about the feeling of checking what someone typed and deciding how honest to be next.
