Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress is for players who want a colony sim that turns every system into a story generator. By our assessment, its great strength is the depth: dwarves, needs, workshops, underground layers, and all the little failures that make a fortress feel alive. The downside is also the point of it, because the interface and learning curve demand patience and a willingness to read a lot of systems rather than just relax with them. In practice it feels less like managing a neat base and more like keeping track of a living machine that keeps producing accidents, triumphs, and disasters. Compared with simpler city-builders, it is far harsher and far denser, and that is why it has such a devoted reputation. The game does not try to be friendly in the usual sense, and the ceiling is set by how much complexity a player can take at once.
