Dungeon Keeper Gold

Dungeon Keeper Gold still stands out because it lets you play the bad side properly: building a lair, feeding rooms, trapping intruders, and nudging little minions into doing the dirty work. By our assessment, that gives it a sharper comic edge than most strategy games, since the pleasure comes from planning a nasty machine and watching it misbehave in amusing ways. The downside is also part of the old-school charm: the controls and pace ask for patience, and the interface can feel fussy now. In practice it is a game about layout, timing, and constant small interventions rather than grand battlefield drama. Compared with cleaner modern strategy games, it is messier and meaner, which is exactly why people still remember it. If someone wants a polished, modern management sim, this is not the place. What it offers is a very specific dark-strategy mood, with rooms, creatures, and traps doing most of the talking.
