Doom & Destiny

Doom & Destiny is a comedy RPG that leans into parody, menu-driven combat, and the old comforts of turn-based party play. By our assessment, its main appeal is the way it treats classic fantasy questing with a straight face only long enough to poke holes in it. The downside is that parody can wear thin if someone wants serious story or tightly tuned systems, because the joke matters as much as the dungeon crawl. In practice it is a game of roaming, levelling, equipping, and letting the writing carry much of the charm. It sits between traditional JRPG structure and broad comic riffing, closer to a joke-first retro tribute than to a grand serious role-playing epic. Doom & Destiny works best for players who enjoy familiar mechanics with a layer of self-mockery, and it is less convincing when treated as a straight role-playing game.
