Disciples: Liberation is for players who want a dark fantasy strategy campaign with party-building, tactical grid combat, and a slower, more methodical pace than flashy real-time systems. By our assessment, it does well at giving battles weight and making every recruit and position on the map matter. The trade-off is that its interface and campaign structure can feel stern, and its world is more grim than welcoming. In practice it asks for attention to placement, resource choices, and long stretches of planning between fights. Compared with bigger strategy names, it sits closer to old-school role-playing tactics than to quick spectacle, and that focus is the point. It is a solid pick if you want combat decisions to carry the evening, and less so if you want something light or breezy. The map, the squad screen, and the turn order do most of the work.
