Desktop Dungeons turns the usual dungeon crawl into a fast, puzzle-first game, and that is what makes it stick. By our assessment, it is a compact roguelike for people who like planning every step, squeezing value out of limited resources, and winning by reading the map before swinging at anything. Its strength is the way every tile matters: health, mana, resistances, gods, and items all feed into one tight decision loop. The downside is that it can feel exacting, because a bad route or a careless fight snowballs quickly. In practice it has the feel of a small tactical board game disguised as a dungeon run, with short attempts that invite retries rather than long sessions. It sits closer to a dense puzzle roguelike than to a power fantasy, and the ceiling is how much patience someone has for learning its systems and its awkward-looking, very deliberate pace.
