Dear Esther: Landmark Edition is for players who want atmosphere, not systems, and who are willing to let a walking game work through space, voice, and pace. By our assessment, its strength is the controlled loneliness of its island setting and the way the narration hangs over each stretch of shoreline. The trade-off is obvious: there is little conventional gameplay, so anyone expecting puzzles, combat, or clear goals will bounce off it fast. In practice it feels closer to moving through a memory than solving a game, which is exactly why people remember it. Among narrative walking sims it remains one of the clearer reference points, even if its ceiling is still the same as the genre’s ceiling: mood first, interaction second.
