Dead Island: Riptide Definitive Edition keeps the co-op zombie-survival loop of the series: scavenging, crafting, brawling, and pushing through a spoiled tropical setting with a lot of melee combat. By our assessment, it is at its best when you want messy first-person action with loot and a steady drip of upgrades rather than careful horror. The trade-off is that the combat can feel blunt and repetitive, and the whole thing leans on a structure that was already familiar before this version sharpened the presentation. In practice it is about moving from one fight to the next, checking bodies and containers, and surviving by attrition. It sits closer to a loud open-area action game than to tense survival horror. The name tells you exactly how much polished brutality it wants to sell, and the ceiling is the usual one for this kind of game: repetition once the loop has been learned.
