Dead Island Definitive Edition is the zombie-action package for people who want melee combat, scavenging, and co-op set in a tropical outbreak. By our assessment, the strongest thing about it is the loop of searching for weapons, keeping them repaired, and beating back infected enemies at close range. The rough edge is that this kind of game leans heavily on repetition, and the upgrade-and-break cycle can start to feel mechanical after a while. In practice, it is a lot of running, looting, crafting, and then fighting again, with the island setting doing much of the mood work. It sits as a cleaned-up reissue of a game that was already known more for its premise and co-op than for elegant combat. People who like a grindy survival action game may still have a good time; people wanting variety or precision will notice the limits quickly.
