DEFCON

DEFCON turns nuclear war into a cold, abstract strategy game, and that starkness is exactly what makes it memorable. By our assessment, it is strongest as a map-control game where positioning fleets, tracking missile exchanges, and deciding when not to escalate matter more than flashy effects. The downside is that the abstraction can feel emotionally distant, because the game is deliberately spare and its victory conditions are cruelly clinical. In play it has the tense, quiet feel of watching a problem spread across a screen while every choice makes the next one worse. Against other strategy games, it stands out for being stripped back and focused on deterrence rather than empire building. DEFCON is for players who like severe, readable strategy and do not need character drama or elaborate systems around it. The scoreboard logic is simple, but the decisions are not.
