Contra Anniversary Collection

Contra Anniversary Collection pulls together a run of classic run-and-gun games for people who want the old arcade rhythm in one place. By our assessment, its main strength is obvious: it preserves a group of hard, fast shooters that helped define the genre, with local co-op and the kind of level design that moves straight from one threat to the next. The trade-off is also obvious, because these games were designed to be punishing and can feel unforgiving now unless someone likes repetition and pattern learning. In practice it is a set of sharp, brisk games rather than a single unified package, so the value depends on how much those older Contra entries still click. Against modern action collections, it is less about polish and more about preserving the original feel. The collection works best as a history shelf for shoot-’em-up fans, and much less as an easy entry point for newcomers. It is a bundle of legacy arcade design, not a softened remake.
