Commander Keen

Commander Keen stands out because it turns a side-scrolling platformer into something loose, bright, and a little mischievous instead of strict and punishing. By our assessment, that is exactly why it still matters: the hopping, exploring, and pogo-stick movement give it a playful rhythm that is easy to recognize. Its real strength is the clear level design and the sense of personality that early PC action games often lacked. The trade-off is age; the jumping and keyboard feel come from an earlier era, so it can seem stiff beside modern platformers. In practice, it is about learning little spaces, timing jumps, and enjoying the joke of being a kid in a sci-fi world. Compared with later mascot platformers, Commander Keen is rougher but more curious, and that is part of its charm. It is more a landmark of PC platforming than a comfort pick for someone who wants smooth movement first.
