Codenames

Codenames turns word association into a table game, and the whole point is reading one another without saying too much. By our assessment, that is its strongest trick: a simple setup that can produce a lot of tension from one clue and a few guessed cards. The downside is also built in, because it leans hard on group chemistry and on players who can think in neat categories without overexplaining. In practice it is brisk, social, and often funny in the anxious way party games can be. It sits closer to a clean social deduction game than to a trivia quiz, and it asks for a group that enjoys sideways thinking more than direct answers.
