Codename: Rogue Fleet

Codename: Rogue Fleet points to naval or space-flavoured tactics, the kind of game people pick up when they want planning, positioning, and a bit of command-line tension without a lot of hand-holding. By our assessment, that sort of premise can be strong when the controls are clear and the decisions actually matter from turn to turn or mission to mission. The downside is familiar to strategy games with a fleet-management angle: if the interface is clumsy or the mission structure repeats, the sense of command can turn into bookkeeping. In practice the pleasure comes from reading the field, shifting units, and accepting that a bad order can sink the whole run. It sits somewhere beside other tactical and fleet-management games rather than broad action games, and its ceiling is set by how much variety the scenarios provide. Codename: Rogue Fleet is for people who enjoy thinking in systems, not for anyone who wants instant spectacle.
