Chinese Chess asks for planning several moves ahead, because the pieces are powerful only when their lines and spaces are set up well. By our assessment, that is its real strength: the game rewards board sense, patience, and reading the whole position instead of rushing tactics. The downside is the same one that makes it good, since the rules are unusual enough that a beginner has to learn how each piece moves and how the river and palaces shape the board. In practice it plays like a sharper, more positional cousin of western chess, with more direct attacks and less hiding behind structure. Chinese Chess sits in the classic abstract strategy family, and it is best for players who like calculation and territory control. It is not a quick filler game, and the first few sessions can feel a bit stern until the pieces start making sense.
