Children of Silentown

Children of Silentown asks for patience, because its real business is listening to a small town, reading faces, and piecing together a grim fairytale mood from conversation and clues. By our assessment, the hand-drawn look and the way it leans on point-and-click investigation are what make it memorable. The downside is that the pace is deliberately slow, and if you want action or constant payoff, this style can feel heavy. In practice it is a game of careful clicking, inventory use, and dialogue, with the atmosphere doing much of the work. Compared with louder adventure games, it is quieter and more restrained, and that restraint is the point. Children of Silentown is for players who like story-first adventures with a dark edge, and it is not for anyone who wants fast systems or lots of mechanical noise.
