Centralia: Homecoming

Centralia: Homecoming leans on atmosphere and exploration more than on elaborate systems, which makes sense for a horror game built around a deserted place and the feeling of being somewhere wrong. By our assessment, its strength is the mood of walking through an uneasy setting and piecing together what the place suggests rather than being pushed through constant combat. The limitation is that this style depends heavily on whether the environment and pacing hold attention; if they do not, the game can seem slight. In practice the player is moving, looking, and waiting for tension to do the work. It sits among slower first-person horror games, closer to walking-sim suspense than to action horror, and that is useful to know before going in. People who want quiet dread and a place to explore may get what they want, while anyone who needs systems, speed, or frequent shocks should look elsewhere.
