Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is the sort of action game that wants you moving through combat, platforming, and gothic set pieces without much slack in between. By our assessment, it is most interesting when its big environments and boss encounters are doing the work, because that is where the series' heavier style still has some force. The trade-off is a familiar one: spectacle and texture over clean precision, so the controls and pacing can feel less nimble than the best action-platform games. In practice it has a dense, dramatic feel, with a lot of forwarding momentum and a lot of pressure to keep up. Against the rest of Castlevania, it sits in the modern action side rather than the older exploratory one. The name itself carries the 2, and the game is at its best when treated as a loud, elaborate follow-up rather than a fresh start.
