Carmageddon: Max Damage is a demolition-racing game for players who want crashes, traffic chaos, and the old Carmageddon stunt of scoring by smashing into rivals and pedestrians alike. By our assessment, the series’ main strength is still that ugly, deliberate clash of speed and violence, with vehicles built to be battered rather than polished to perfection. The downside is that the joke is also the limit: if the mayhem and black humor do not land, there is not much else to lean on. In practice it tends to be loud, abrasive, and repetitive in a way that some people find funny and others find tiring very fast. It sits beside the earlier Carmageddon games and other destructive racers, but it is not trying to be a clean circuit racer.
