Breath of Death VII

Breath of Death VII lives on joke-rpg timing and on the charm of making an old-school turn-based quest feel deliberately lightweight and self-aware. By our assessment, that is the attraction: it is brief, odd, and built to poke at classic fantasy RPG habits instead of pretending to be grand. The downside is that the humour and small scale are also the ceiling, because there is not much room for depth once the parody is doing most of the work. In practice it plays like a compact retro RPG with simple battles, familiar wandering, and a lot of wink-and-nod writing. Compared with bigger throwback RPGs, it is more of a sketch than a long campaign, which makes it easier to finish but less substantial to live in. Breath of Death VII is for people who want a quick parody of old RPG habits, and it leaves little behind once the punchlines have landed.
