Blackwake is naval combat built around crew cooperation, ship handling, and chaotic close-range fights between sailing ships. By our assessment, its best quality is the way a crew has to act like a crew: someone steers, someone manages guns, someone repairs damage, and the whole ship only works when people move together. The downside is that this kind of teamwork game can feel unruly if coordination is thin, because a ship in this setting is a machine that punishes hesitation. In practice it is noisy, messy, and very much about boarding actions, cannon fire, and keeping a vessel afloat under pressure. It sits closer to multiplayer pirate combat than to a polished naval sim, and that roughness is part of its identity. Blackwake is strongest when players want cooperation with real friction, not a clean fantasy of commanding the sea.
