Black Skylands

Black Skylands mixes top-down shooting, airship travel, and base building into a steampunk frontier game about moving between islands and holding territory. By our assessment, its best idea is the combination of open skirmishes in the sky with more grounded exploration on the islands, which gives it more variety than a plain twin-stick shooter. The downside is that this kind of hybrid can feel busy without always feeling deep, because it asks the player to juggle combat, upgrades, and travel systems. In practice it has the texture of a game constantly introducing another task, another route, another resource to carry around. Compared with stricter shooters or stricter survival games, Black Skylands sits awkwardly in between, which is a strength when the mix clicks and a weakness when it does not. The name fits the mood, but the game is really about managing space and momentum more than chasing one clean fantasy. People who like their action with a bit of crafting and map control may find enough here; people who want a single sharp core loop probably will not.
