Battle for Wesnoth

Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game built around hex-grid maps, recruitment, and careful positioning. By our assessment, its strongest point is the amount of tactical play it gets out of simple rules: terrain, unit traits, and movement range matter every turn, so small mistakes actually count. The downside is the same old one for thoughtful strategy games: it asks for patience, attention, and a willingness to learn unit matchups before it opens up.
