Balrum

Balrum is an old-school isometric fantasy RPG for people who want open-ended wandering, crafting, and a lot of surviving on their own terms. By our assessment, its best side is the broad sandbox feel: you can spend time gathering, building, and fighting in a world that does not rush you. The trade-off is that the same freedom also makes it feel rough and sometimes slow, with a presentation that sits well behind the bigger names in the genre. In practice it asks for patience and a taste for digging into systems rather than being carried by spectacle, and that makes it closer to a niche PC role-playing game than a polished mainstream adventure. If someone wants a sprawling low-budget fantasy crawl with room to tinker, Balrum has a clear appeal; if they want sleek combat or modern polish, it is an easy pass. The map and the survival layer do most of the work.
