Axiom Verge

Axiom Verge is a Metroid-style action platformer built around lonely exploration, hidden routes, and tools that slowly reopen the map in new ways. By our assessment, its best quality is how firmly it commits to discovery: new weapons and movement options keep changing what a room means, which is exactly what this genre should do. The downside is that the same density can make it feel unforgiving, especially when the player is expected to read the world carefully and keep track of where old doors and paths lead. In practice it is a game of mapping, backtracking, and learning the layout until the world starts to make sense. Compared with many retro-inspired platformers, it leans harder into isolation and secret-hunting than into speed. Axiom Verge rewards patience and attention, and it asks less for reflex flash than for memory and curiosity.
