Avernum 4

Avernum 4 is a party-based computer role-playing game for players who want long exploration, turn-by-turn combat, and a lot of old-school dialogue and quest reading. By our assessment, what it does well is the deliberate, text-heavy crawl through a large underground world, where character-building and party management matter more than spectacle. The downside is that this style is slow by modern standards and asks for patience with menus, text, and a fairly traditional structure. In practice it feels closer to classic computer RPG design than to streamlined action role-playing, and that is exactly the point. Compared with flashy modern fantasy games, Avernum 4 is narrower, drier, and more willing to let systems and writing carry the experience. The number in the name is part of the series title, and the game sits best with people who miss that older pace and do not mind reading for their progress.
