Artifact is Valve’s digital trading card game, and it is the kind of thing that mainly attracts people who like deckbuilding, market-like card play, and a ruleset that asks them to think across multiple lanes at once. By our assessment, its best idea was always the lane structure and the way it tried to make every move matter in more than one place. The problem is that the game’s reputation is bound up with a rough reception and a design that felt heavy for a card game, so it asks a lot before it gives much back. In practice it is a busy, tactical thing where reading the board matters more than flashy combos, but the overall flow can feel more like accounting than play. Compared with Hearthstone, it is more demanding and less breezy; compared with simpler digital card games, it has a steeper learning curve and a narrower appeal. It suits players who like dense rules and deliberate decisions, not people who want a quick collectible-card loop.
