Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition keeps the classic real-time strategy loop alive: gather resources, age up, scout, wall, raid, and try to outthink another economy before the armies collide. By our assessment, its real strength is how cleanly it still teaches timing and macro play, with many civilizations that change the feel of familiar openings without breaking the core. The downside is just as classic: the game rewards knowledge hard, so new players can feel lost fast when build orders, counters, and map control start piling up. In practice it is a busy game of hotkeys, constant expansion, and small tactical mistakes that snowball into bigger ones. It sits near the top of the old-school RTS pile because it has outlived many of its peers without losing the shape of the original design. For anyone who wants a deep strategy game with a long tail of skill, it still makes sense; for anyone looking for a gentle entry, the learning curve is steep and unapologetic.
