Agarest: Generations of War

Agarest: Generations of War is a sprawling Japanese-style RPG for players who like party building, long battles, and a lot of systems layered on top of each other. By our assessment, its real hook is the generational structure, which makes it feel more like a family line of heroes than a single straightforward quest. That breadth is also the trade-off: these games ask for patience, menu time, and tolerance for repetition, and they are not built for quick bursts. In practice it tends to be a lot of combat, stat management, and gradual unlocking rather than constant drama. Compared with leaner tactical RPGs, it is heavier, slower, and more committed to length. Agarest: Generations of War will appeal to people who enjoy long-form JRPG structure and do not mind grind, but it is a poor fit for anyone wanting a brisk strategy game.
