ATLAS is a survival MMO that tries to mix pirate fantasy, ship building, base management, and large-scale multiplayer into one rough package. By our assessment, the appeal is obvious on paper: crews, islands, sailing, and territorial drama all sit in the same game. The trade-off is equally obvious, because this kind of sprawling online survival game usually asks for patience, grind tolerance, and a group that can stay organized. In practice it is the sort of game people approach for the promise of big freedom and then spend a lot of time dealing with systems, upkeep, and pressure from other players. Compared with tighter survival games, ATLAS is broader but also more unwieldy, and that is where its ceiling lives. It is a fit for players who want a messy maritime sandbox; it is not for anyone looking for a clean, quick session.
