9 Years of Shadows

9 Years of Shadows leans on side-scrolling action and Metroidvania structure, so the player spends most of the time opening routes, learning enemy patterns, and returning with new abilities. By our assessment, the attraction is its mood and presentation, which give the exploration a calmer, more deliberate feel than many games in the same lane. The downside is that this style lives and dies by traversal and combat rhythm, so if those loops do not land, the whole thing can feel ordinary very quickly. In practice it is a map of gated paths, side rooms, and gradual power growth, with the usual pleasure of turning a blocked path into an open one. Compared with larger genre heavyweights, it looks more modest, but that also keeps the design easier to follow. 9 Years of Shadows is a solid pick for someone who wants a familiar Metroidvania framework with a strong visual identity and a measured pace, and its ceiling is set by how much that loop can stay fresh.
