Lightning Protocol

Lightning Protocol sounds like infrastructure first, which is often where cryptocurrency names go when they want to suggest speed, routing, or a layer that sits under other apps. By our assessment, that makes it more of a technical promise than a clearly readable consumer product, and the problem is that the public label here says almost nothing beyond the style of ambition. The upside of protocol-style crypto is that it can point at real mechanics instead of pure branding; the downside is that those mechanics are usually hard to inspect from the outside. In practice, this kind of project can feel abstract, with more attention paid to architecture than to everyday use. Lightning Protocol therefore belongs with the many crypto names that are easier to admire in theory than to explain in plain language. It is not a neat retail coin, and that is exactly why it can be interesting to some and opaque to others.
