L2 Standard Bridged WETH (Base) sits in the middle ground between a major asset and a specific chain, which is exactly why people reach for it. By our assessment, it is good at one boring but important thing: making ETH-style collateral and trading work inside Base with the familiar WETH shape. The downside is not subtle — bridged assets inherit the extra moving parts of the bridge and the assumptions of the L2 they live on. In practice that means a token that is useful because it is ordinary, not because it is exciting, and ordinary is often what DeFi wants. Against native ETH it is one step removed, but against ad hoc wrappers it is usually the cleaner, more standardised version. If the goal is activity inside Base, it has a clear job; if the goal is simply to hold ETH as such, this is the wrong layer to think about.
