A virtual-analog synth in a phone or tablet gives Magellan Synthesizer 2 room for more than preset browsing: its sound controls, effects and sequencing tools are aimed at building and shaping electronic parts. That makes it a compact instrument for sketching sounds and musical ideas without a separate hardware synthesizer. By our assessment, its appeal lies in offering sound design as well as simple playback. Touch controls can be less precise than knobs, and a dense set of synth parameters takes time to learn. It is also a specialist music tool, not a general-purpose recorder or a substitute for a full production setup. The sequence and sound still need arranging into a finished track elsewhere.
