MIDI Layers

Its defining idea is to build music from separate MIDI layers rather than treat a performance as one finished take. MIDI Layers puts that approach in the hands of musicians arranging parts or assembling a repeated musical idea piece by piece. MIDI carries note and performance instructions, not sound by itself, so an instrument or host is still needed to hear the parts. By our assessment, the layering concept is useful for trying combinations and developing an arrangement without recording every instrument as audio. The trade-off is that MIDI workflows can feel abstract if the goal is simply to record a live band or capture a finished mix. MIDI Layers is a composition tool, not a library of sounds; the actual timbre comes from the instruments connected to it.
