Changing aperture, shutter speed and ISO in CameraSim makes the effect of camera settings easier to understand. The simulator connects those controls to exposure and to visible differences such as depth of field and motion blur. By our assessment, that makes it a useful learning aid for people getting to grips with manual photography. It offers a more hands-on way to explore settings than a list of definitions, and adjustments can be tried without a physical camera. The trade-off is that a simulation cannot reproduce the feel of a real camera, the quirks of a lens or the changing conditions of a real shoot. It teaches what the controls do, not every decision that comes with taking a photograph. Repeatedly adjusting one setting at a time is still the clearest way to learn from it.
