By our assessment, that makes it more focused than a general email app, especially for keeping track of public-service correspondence. Messages can be read in the app, and notifications can flag new mail; access uses DigiD, the Netherlands’ digital identity system. The practical benefit is having official letters together rather than searching through a personal inbox. Its scope is also its main limit: it is for government correspondence in the Netherlands, not ordinary email or every conversation with a public office. Some government business still happens through separate services, so the app is not a universal portal for dealing with the state. It is a clear-purpose tool for people who receive messages through Berichtenbox, rather than a replacement for the wider range of government websites. A notification points to new mail; it does not complete the task described in the message.
