Be Kind Rewind

Be Kind Rewind is built for viewers who enjoy comedy that comes from improvised repair jobs, homemade versions, and people trying to save a broken local shop. By our assessment, its nicest strength is the warm, analog feel of the whole setup: videotapes, quick fixes, and amateur reinvention give it a very specific texture. The downside is also part of the joke, because the premise depends on a fairly niche affection for obsolete media and low-tech problem solving. In practice it plays as a gentle, slightly shaggy comedy rather than a tight machine of set pieces. It sits apart from slick studio comedies by being more handmade and less polished, which is exactly the point. The 2008 date and Comedy label fit that DVD-era, block-by-block feeling, and the movie keeps its charm in the details of making do.
